By JOSH BOUCHER and JOHN LEE-AYEANAssociated PressThe New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles will play in a preseason game on Thursday, with a win for the Jets could give them a bit of a boost.
The Jets are coming off their worst loss of the preseason when they fell 27-10 to the Dallas Cowboys last weekend.
The Jets are 0-4 in the preseason and have a 5-3 record against teams that have finished the season 8-8 or worse.
That will not happen in Philadelphia.
The Eagles (3-6) have won three straight and four of their last five, including two by a combined score of 30-0.
The last time the Eagles and Jets met in Philadelphia was last season when the Eagles won 35-24 in the season opener.
The Eagles have been without injured players on defense for the past three weeks, and linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who missed three games with a knee injury, is expected to return for the first time since injuring his knee in Week 1.
Rookie cornerback Marcus Williams, who has been sidelined for the season with a foot injury, has been cleared to return after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 MCL sprain.
The team is hopeful he will play against the Jets.
The other key to winning will be whether the Eagles will get to their stride.
They have the league’s second-worst run defense, allowing an average of 5.6 yards per carry.
That is a big part of why they rank third in the league in rushing yards per game (6.1).
However, they have a pair of top quarterbacks who have struggled to get the job done, Nick Foles and Matt Barkley.
Foles threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns against the Cowboys last week, but Barkley threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns and completed just 6 of 15 passes for 78 yards in the win.
The win will give the Eagles hope that they can make up for the poor play from their defense and improve their overall performance against the run.
The Philadelphia Eagles (2-6, 3-6 AFC East) are coming into the preseason with their first win of the year.
They are 3-1 since the start of September and have won their last two games.
They face a team that finished 7-9 last season and has lost its past two games by a total of 19 points.
